BSc (hons) Dietetics, APD, PhD
Dr Alice Day is an Accredited Practising Dietitian who specialises in the dietary management of inflammatory bowel diseases and therapeutic dietary strategies to improve gastrointestinal symptoms, bowel function, restore microbial balance and gut health, and mental well-being in adolescents and adults. Alice is passionate about helping people to eat the right way for individual symptoms and supporting people to see how food can be enjoyed rather than feared. Food should be one of life's greatest pleasures, enjoyed through knowledge of how to eat well, use good quality produce, cook at home and share meals with family & friends.
Alice completed her training and worked in the United Kingdom before returning to Adelaide. Alice has worked across public and private hospitals predominantly in the clinical areas of gastroenterology, surgery, critical care, and mental health nutrition. Alice completed her PhD in Diet and Inflammatory Bowel Disease in 2021 and currently works as a post-doctoral researcher and clinical dietitian at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Alice co-leads a diet research program at Basil Hetzel Institute with multiple active trials including investigating diet as therapy for ulcerative colitis, use of exclusive enteral nutrition therapy for Crohn's disease, and the use of diet and microbial manipulation strategies including faecal microbiota transplantation for inflammatory bowel diseases and Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Alice is a PhD-qualified IBD Dietitian, highly experienced in providing dietary support to people with inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease / ulcerative colitis / stomas / pouch). Alice is part of the IBD Translational Research Group at the The Queen Elizabeth Hospital & Basil Hetzel Institute, an Affiliate Lecturer at the University of Adelaide and is currently leading a randomised controlled trial examining diet therapy for ulcerative colitis and supervising multiple IBD-diet research projects. Alice educates and provides support to clients to use diet therapies to treat active inflammation (including exclusive enteral nutrition), dietary strategies to manage symptoms of IBD and improve bowel function, and nutrition support therapies to improve nutritional status including home parenteral nutrition, enteral nutrition and oral nutrition support. Alice works closely with IBD Specialists, IBD Nurses, Colorectal Surgeons, Psychologists & gut hypnotherapists to ensure the clinical, nutritional and mental health needs of her patients are supported.
Functional disorders of the gut-brain axis: improving gut function
Alice has a particular interest in using dietary strategies and psychological therapies to improve functional gastrointestinal disorders and symptoms. Alice works closely with key members of the multidisciplinary team to achieve the best outcomes for people suffering from debilitating and troublesome gastrointestinal symptoms. Areas of expertise include symptom management of altered bowel habits, excess wind, reflux, bloating and pain, irritable bowel syndrome and use of FODMAP therapy, constipation, gastroparesis, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and slow gut motility.
Intestinal failure, short gut syndrome and nutrient malabsorption
Alice is trained in the dietary management of complex gastrointestinal surgery, short gut/bowel syndrome, intestinal failure and malabsorption of nutrients. Alice is highly experienced in using parenteral nutrition support and other oral and pharmacological strategies to manage short gut syndrome and high output stomas.
Liver disease
Alice is trained in the dietary management of liver disease and use of therapeutic diets including Mediterranean diet, high protein/no added salt diet, and amino acid supplementation to treat different types and stages of liver disease. Alice is currently undertaking research into the dietary management of Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis and trialing a nutrition and metabolic risk liver clinic for patients at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Disordered Eating
Alice's other key focus area is working with adolescent and adult clients with who struggle with food anxiety, intrusive food thoughts, food rules, and disruptive eating practices including food avoidance and dietary restriction. This is particularly relevant to people living with digestive issues including inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome and food intolerances. Alice counsels clients in mindful and intuitive eating and supports clients to develop balanced eating attitudes and food behaviours. Alice also works alongside psychiatrists, psychologists, and mental health nurses to provide nutrition counselling to clients with a wide range of mental health disorders.
