A balanced approach to
eating, gut health & mental well-being

Gastroenterology Specialist Dietitians
Dr Alice Day
Rachel Davis
Dr Alice Day established her gastroenterology-focused nutrition consultancy services in 2009 and Rachel Davis joined Lumen Dietitians in 2019.

We are specialist gastroenterology dietitians with expertise in prescribing therapeutic dietary strategies to improve gut health, mental well-being and restoration of relationships with food which can become compromised after experiencing unpleasant gut symptoms. Lumen Dietitians undertake comprehensive dietary, gastrointestinal health and mental well-being assessments to identify a personalised approach to eating.

Lumen Dietitians can help navigate the overwhelming amount of dietary information (and misinformation) that surrounds modifying diet for gastrointestinal problems. We educate and support patients to achieve a balanced approach to eating, free from unnecessary dietary restrictions and food anxiety. We ensure dietary strategies are tailored to each person's needs to manage disease or the troublesome symptoms that impact daily quality of life.

Lumen Dietitians are actively engaged in PhD supervision and training, gastrointestinal dietary research and stay up-to-date in the latest advances in dietary research to improve gut health.

Food can affect gastrointestinal symptoms and gut function. Gastrointestinal symptoms can affect mental well-being and quality of life. Mental well-being can trigger and affect gastrointestinal symptoms. Lumen Dietitians recognise this cycle and are experienced in supporting patients to identify triggers of gastrointestinal issues. A strong relationship also exists between the brain and gastrointestinal tract. This is known as the gut-brain axis. It is well-established that stress, anxiety and mental health can influence gut symptoms. For some people, identifying these triggers can be equally or more beneficial than diet alone. Lumen Dietitians work closely with Gastroenterologists, Clinical & Health Psychologists, Gut Hypnotherapists, Pelvic floor Physiotherapists, IBD Nurses, Stomal Therapists and Colorectal Surgeons as part of delivering integrated, evidence-based care.
